Who is eligible?

  • You must be a citizen of a country outside the United Kingdom and apply to one of these Cambridge courses: PhD (full-time or part-time), MLitt (full-time) or a one-year full-time postgraduate course, with some exceptions.
  • The FAQ lists eligible courses as MPhil, MLitt, MRes, LLM and PhD. Master’s-level degrees must be full-time.
  • Gates Cambridge does not consider: any undergraduate degree, MASt courses, part-time degrees other than the PhD, and professional or non-standard degrees such as the MBA, EMBA, MFin, Executive Master of Accounting, Business Doctorate, PGCE, MBBChir Clinical Studies, the 6-year MD, the Graduate Course in Medicine and the Master of Conservation of Easel Painting. The FAQ also lists PGCert, PGDip and MSt as not eligible.
  • A second master’s does not make you ineligible, but you must give a strong justification and it is advisable to check with your prospective department.
  • If you have already started a course, you cannot apply to fund the remainder of it.
  • There is no minimum GPA. Academic excellence is one of the selection criteria and is considered across the whole application.
  • Gates Cambridge is needs-blind: applicants are evaluated only on academic qualifications, commitment and potential, not on their financial circumstances.

The pages we read do not state any age limit or work-experience requirement for Gates Cambridge.

How to apply

You submit one combined application for admission and funding in the University of Cambridge Graduate Application Portal. To be considered for Gates Cambridge you must complete the admission section (course and College place) and the Gates Cambridge part of the funding section. The four Gates Cambridge questions

Criterion Question and length
Academic excellence Describe how, through your education and past experiences, you have displayed academic excellence. (about 200 words, up to 1,400 characters)
Reasons for choice of course Explain why you want to study this specific course at Cambridge and how it will facilitate your future plans. (about 200 words, up to 1,400 characters)
Commitment to improving the lives of others Give an example or examples of how you have shown this commitment, why it matters to you and how it is relevant to your future plans. (about 300 words, up to 2,100 characters)
Capacity for leadership Give an example or examples of how you have shown leadership, for example by initiating a change or bringing others together to achieve a goal, and how it will help you make an impact in the future. (about 300 words, up to 2,100 characters)

Gates Cambridge says these are the only questions that ask specifically about your fit for the programme, and they are used to distinguish between candidates nominated by departments. It advises using specific examples from your background, achievements, experiences and future plans; there is no right answer.

Other parts of the application

  • Research proposal (PhD applicants only): required if your PhD application for admission does not already include one.
  • Two academic references for admission, plus a Gates Cambridge reference giving the referee’s assessment of your suitability against the four criteria. The referee also ranks you (with the size of the comparison group) and rates you as exceptional, strong, not strong or weak, and may type or paste up to 4,000 characters or upload a letter.
  • Who should write the Gates Cambridge reference: someone of appropriate standing who understands the criteria and can answer with authority, such as a current or former academic advisor, an employer or a senior person at an organisation where you volunteered. One of your two academic referees may write it if they know your personal qualities and write specifically about the criteria. Do not ask a friend or family member. Brief them fully and make sure both your academic and Gates Cambridge referees submit by the deadline.
  • Supervisor: you do not have to confirm a supervisor before applying, but PhD and most research MPhil applicants should contact a potential supervisor and research the department.

Practical rules from the FAQ

  • Multiple applications: you can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship for as many eligible courses as you apply to (for the 2025/6 cycle the maximum was 7 applications, and a withdrawn application counts). Each needs its own funding section. If you are nominated for interview for several courses you will be asked which one to progress with.
  • No edits: you cannot edit your application once submitted.
  • Fees: Gates Cambridge does not pay the University of Cambridge application fee. See the University’s application fee waiver page.
  • Interviews: one night of accommodation and parking is offered if required, and you can interview online.

How selection works

Gates Cambridge uses a two-stage process:

  1. Departmental nomination: academic departments nominate a small number of eligible applicants who meet all four criteria to a very high level. A relatively small number of applicants are nominated and invited to interview.
  2. Interview: all nominated candidates are invited to a 25 to 30 minute interview, in person or virtually, before one of four subject panels (Arts, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences). Panels include experienced academics and practitioners and may include Gates Cambridge alumni and a representative of the Trust.

An interview has four sections: welcome and introduction; Gates Cambridge (what you know about it, your motivation, why you could be a Gates Cambridge Scholar, and the opportunities and responsibilities of a prestigious full-cost scholarship); academic and career plans (your passion for your subject, a convincing justification of your Cambridge course and a link to your career plans, possibly with probing intellectual or ethical questions that have no right answers); and final thoughts and questions.

The four selection criteria

  • Academic excellence: shown through transcripts, references, experience and potential to succeed on the course. Cambridge departments nominate only the most academically outstanding applicants.
  • Reasons for choice of course: a strong case for a particular Cambridge degree. PhD and most research MPhil applicants need to contact a potential supervisor, and a summary of the research project is part of the application. Taught MPhil and other applicants must show how the course will facilitate their career plans.
  • A commitment to improving the lives of others: interpreted broadly; you define it with evidence of your past, current and future commitment to the societies where you will live and work.
  • A capacity for leadership: expressed in many ways; give evidence of leadership so far and how it may have impact in your future career.

If you are not called to interview you receive an email saying your application was unsuccessful. Gates Cambridge does not provide feedback, and it says an unsuccessful application does not affect how you are considered in later years; you may apply again.
