Bhopal Travel Guide: Upper Lake, Bharat Bhavan and a Day Trip to Sanchi

Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is known as the City of Lakes. It is easy to enjoy in two or three days, with lake views, museums, old-city markets and one of India’s great World Heritage sites nearby.

Top places to see

  • Upper Lake (Bhojtal): a large, historic lake said to have been built in the 11th century by Raja Bhoj, with promenades and viewpoints.
  • Van Vihar National Park: a national park and zoological space beside the Upper Lake, with animals kept close to natural habitats.
  • Bharat Bhavan: a multi-arts centre for visual art, poetry, theatre and music, designed by architect Charles Correa and built partly below ground to protect the lake view.
  • Taj-ul-Masajid and the old city: a big mosque and lively old-city lanes.
  • Sanchi Stupa: a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 49 km from Bhopal, with stupas, pillars and gateways dating from the 3rd to the 12th century.
