Indore Food Guide: Poha-Jalebi, Sarafa Bazaar and Chappan Dukan

Ask anyone who has visited Indore what they remember most, and the answer is often the food. From a morning plate of poha and jalebi to late-night snacks at Sarafa Bazaar, here is a simple guide for first-time visitors.

Two famous food places

Place Best time Known for
Chappan Dukan (56 shops), Palasia area Morning and around 4 PM. Shops open from about 6 AM. Poha and jalebi, khopra patties, snacks and sweets. It is often described as one of the cleaner street-food hubs.
Sarafa Bazaar, a jewellery market by day From about 8 PM to 2 AM. Weekdays after 11 PM are less crowded. Bhutte ka kees, joshi dahi bada, garadu (a winter special), kulfi falooda and more.

Must-try dishes

  • Indori poha with jalebi: soft flattened rice with jeeravan masala, crunchy sev and coriander, eaten with hot jalebi.
  • Bhutte ka kees: grated corn cooked in milk, ghee and spices, topped with coconut and coriander.
  • Khopra patties: potato patties with a coconut filling.
  • Dahi bada: soft lentil dumplings in curd.
  • Garadu: fried, spiced yam, mostly a winter treat.
  • Sabudana khichdi and dal bafla are also popular.

Visiting tips

  • Wear comfortable footwear. Both places are best explored on foot.
  • Go with an empty stomach and share plates so you can taste more.
  • Choose busy stalls with fresh, hot food, and drink sealed or filtered water.
  • If you have allergies or follow a diet, ask about the ingredients before you order.
  • Keep small cash or UPI ready and check the price before you order.
