A Simple Routine for Better Sleep: 8 Easy Habits
Good sleep helps your mood, focus and health. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says adults should get at least 7 hours of sleep a night, and regularly sleeping less is linked to higher risks of health problems. Here are eight simple habits to try.
Eight easy habits
- Keep a regular time. Go to bed and wake up at about the same time every day, even on weekends.
- Make the room quiet, dark and cool. This can make it easier to fall asleep.
- Go easy on caffeine. Tea, coffee and some soft drinks contain caffeine that keeps you awake. Avoid them later in the day.
- Avoid big meals close to bedtime. Eating a large meal late can make it harder to sleep.
- Stay active. Regular exercise helps sleep, but try not to do hard workouts right before bed.
- Avoid alcohol and nicotine for 1 to 2 hours before bed, as they can disrupt sleep.
- Wind down. Dim the lights, put your phone away and try slow breathing or a short calming routine.
- Get morning light. A little daylight in the morning helps set your body clock.
A simple wind-down plan
| Time before bed | Try this |
|---|---|
| 1 hour | Screens off. Dim the lights. |
| 30 minutes | Warm shower, light reading or gentle stretching. |
| 10 minutes | Slow breathing. Set tomorrow’s to-do list on paper so your mind can rest. |
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you regularly cannot sleep, snore loudly with pauses in breathing, feel very sleepy in the day, or if poor sleep is affecting your mood or work.
