A Simple Routine for Better Sleep: 8 Easy Habits

This article is general wellness information and not medical advice. If you have ongoing sleep problems, please talk to a doctor.

Good sleep helps your mood, focus and health. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says adults should get at least 7 hours of sleep a night, and regularly sleeping less is linked to higher risks of health problems. Here are eight simple habits to try.

Eight easy habits

  1. Keep a regular time. Go to bed and wake up at about the same time every day, even on weekends.
  2. Make the room quiet, dark and cool. This can make it easier to fall asleep.
  3. Go easy on caffeine. Tea, coffee and some soft drinks contain caffeine that keeps you awake. Avoid them later in the day.
  4. Avoid big meals close to bedtime. Eating a large meal late can make it harder to sleep.
  5. Stay active. Regular exercise helps sleep, but try not to do hard workouts right before bed.
  6. Avoid alcohol and nicotine for 1 to 2 hours before bed, as they can disrupt sleep.
  7. Wind down. Dim the lights, put your phone away and try slow breathing or a short calming routine.
  8. Get morning light. A little daylight in the morning helps set your body clock.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you regularly cannot sleep, snore loudly with pauses in breathing, feel very sleepy in the day, or if poor sleep is affecting your mood or work.
