URGENT: the Knight-Hennessy Scholars application for the 2027 cohort closes on Tuesday 6 October 2026 at 1:00 PM Pacific Time, which is 1:30 AM IST on Wednesday 7 October 2026. You must also submit a separate application to a Stanford graduate degree programme.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) is a fully endowed leadership programme for graduate students at Stanford University. Scholars receive up to three years of funding to study any graduate degree at any of Stanford’s seven schools, and take part in the King Global Leadership Program. KHS says it has no restrictions based on age, college or university, field of study or career aspiration, and it encourages citizens and residents of all countries, including India, to apply. This guide covers the 2027 cohort (enrolment in 2027).

You must make two applications

KHS requires that you apply to, be accepted by and enrol in a full-time Stanford graduate degree programme. You submit two separate but concurrent applications: one to Knight-Hennessy Scholars and one to your Stanford degree programme(s).

  • KHS deadline: 6 October 2026, 1:00 PM Pacific Time, the same for every applicant regardless of programme.
  • Degree programme deadline: the earlier of the programme’s deadline for KHS applicants or 1 December 2026. Confirm your programme’s deadline for KHS applicants directly with the department.
  • If your programme’s own deadline is after 1 December 2026, you must still submit your degree application by 1 December 2026. If you submit it later, you stay eligible for the degree programme but not for KHS.
  • MBA applicants must apply in Round 1, the only MBA round that aligns with the KHS timeline.
  • You need an offer from the degree programme. KHS cannot admit you to Stanford, and it advances only applicants that the degree programme confirms are eligible.

You can be admitted to your Stanford programme without being selected for KHS. KHS says this happens every year and that applying to KHS does not preclude or hurt your chances of admission to Stanford.

Who is eligible?

KHS has no restrictions based on age, college or university, field of study or career aspiration, needs no endorsements and has no quotas by discipline, programme or world region. There are two baseline requirements for the 2027 cohort:

Requirement 1: admission to Stanford

You must apply to, be accepted by and enrol in a full-time Stanford graduate degree programme, such as DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS or PhD, and start it in the same year as KHS. The following are not eligible: the Honors Cooperative Program, the Master of Liberal Arts, the JSD and the MLS, current Stanford PhD students adding an MA or MS in their own discipline, and coterminal degrees.

Requirement 2: undergraduate degree date

You must have earned a U.S. bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college or university of recognised standing in January 2020 or later (January 2018 or later for military service). Current college students qualify if they will earn their first degree by September 2027. For degrees earned outside the US, you must hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree and meet the requirements of your programme; Stanford’s Office of Graduate Admissions, not KHS, sets these rules, so check its guidelines for the minimum level of study for international applicants.

What the funding covers

For each of the first three years of study, KHS scholars receive a fellowship covering tuition and associated fees, a stipend for living and academic expenses (room and board, books, supplies, local transport, reasonable personal expenses) and a travel stipend for one annual economy-class trip to and from Stanford. New scholars also receive a one-time relocation stipend. Scholars in years two and three may apply for supplemental funds for academic enrichment such as conference travel.

Degree KHS tuition and stipend Notes
MA, MBA, MFA, MPP, MS, JSM, MLS, LLM Up to six academic quarters 1 to 2 years
JD Nine academic quarters 1 to 3 years
MD Up to 11 quarters (not the summer quarter of year 1) The Medical School funds years 4 and 5
PhD, DMA Up to 12 quarters (nine academic quarters and three summers) Programme funds year 4 and beyond
JD/MBA Nine academic quarters Need-based: apply to the graduate school’s financial aid
MSTP (MD/PhD) Up to 12 quarters Programme funds year 4 and beyond

Not covered: fellowship stipends are taxable, and KHS does not reimburse taxes, so budget for them. The pages we read do not publish dollar amounts for the stipends. Funding applies to the degree named in your KHS admission letter, and scholars who add another graduate degree may apply for additional funding, which is not guaranteed.

What KHS looks for

KHS says there is no typical Knight-Hennessy scholar. It looks for evidence of three criteria throughout your application, your video statement (if invited) and the Finalist Experience:

  • Independence of thought: curious, open-minded, analytical thinkers who communicate clearly from reflection, seek new knowledge and perspectives, make sense of ambiguous circumstances and generate ideas to solve problems.
  • Purposeful leadership: ethical, decisive, resilient people who achieve impactful results, confront challenges with courage and persistence, include and inspire others, and make decisions in line with their values.
  • Civic mindset: humble, empathetic, trustworthy people who make a habit of serving others, consider other perspectives, embrace difference and try to make the world better.

What is in the KHS application

  • Online application
  • Résumé
  • Transcripts and test scores: there is no minimum GPA or test score for KHS itself, but you must meet your degree programme’s minimums and submit whatever tests it requires (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT and so on).
  • Recommendation letters: choose people who know you well. KHS says it is inappropriate to ask a family member. A friend is different from a peer; you may ask a peer, meaning someone you worked with toward a common goal. You may ask the same person to recommend you to both KHS and your programme, but KHS asks recommenders to tailor each letter because the two applications have different criteria, selection processes and committees. KHS typically reviews only your KHS letters and does not customarily review the letters you send to your degree programme. Do not delay submitting because a letter is late: you may submit before the letters arrive, but your own part of the application must be complete by the deadline.
  • Short answers and essay: for example, Short Answer 2 asks when you engaged with someone with a different perspective, acted with courage, and fell short of expectations, within a 250-word limit; you may use one integrated example or separate ones. KHS also asks for “improbable facts”: true things about you that people would not expect, not a list of achievements.

If your degree programme requires English proficiency scores, you must submit them to KHS too. All Stanford graduate programmes accept the TOEFL, most accept the IELTS, and only the MBA also accepts the PTE. Some departments accept scores only from the last 18 months, others 24 months. For most programmes the minimum for admission consideration is a TOEFL score of 90 (taken before 21 January 2026) or 5.5 on the new scale (taken on or after 21 January 2026), and an IELTS score of 7. Check your own programme’s page, because it sets the requirement. Transcripts and degree documents that are not in English must come with an official English translation.

Once you submit, you cannot edit your KHS application, with four exceptions that you can change on your Application Status page: adding test scores, changing recommenders, changing your intended Stanford degree programme(s) and uploading an updated résumé.

After you apply

  • KHS sends video statement invitations on a rolling basis through January. Not receiving one does not mean you were rejected.
  • KHS says that “on January 27” all applicants receive a decision-status update. The page does not state the year, and for this cycle it should be January 2027.
  • Finalists take part in the Finalist Experience, including an Immersion Weekend.
  • You must also receive your Stanford programme’s admission offer. Your programme reviews you separately and tells you its decision on its own timeline, anywhere from December to March, so some finalists already hold a programme offer at Immersion Weekend while others are still waiting. KHS does not offer deferrals, even if your department does; if you are selected but cannot enrol that year, you must reapply for the year you intend to enrol.

Step-by-step plan for the next days (our suggestion)

This plan is our own suggestion built around the official rules.

  1. Choose your Stanford degree programme and confirm its deadline for KHS applicants, and its English and test requirements (GRE, GMAT and so on). Remember the 1 December 2026 cap.
  2. Check that your degree counts as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree under Stanford Graduate Admissions’ international guidelines.
  3. Ask your recommenders now and give them specific examples to write about; do not delay.
  4. Draft your short answers and essay around the three criteria, using specific moments, not general claims.
  5. Prepare your résumé and gather transcripts and test scores.
  6. Submit the KHS application before 1:30 AM IST on 7 October 2026 (better: a day early), then complete your degree programme application.
