Seasonal Flu and Dengue: What ICMR Says and Basic Precautions for Families
No New Flu Threat, Says ICMR
ICMR Director General Dr Rajiv Bahl said at a briefing that influenza viruses currently circulating in India are consistent with recent seasonal patterns and do not point to a new threat. Seasonal flu vaccines are available at major pharmacies and can be taken voluntarily, especially by the elderly, pregnant women, people with chronic conditions and those with weak immunity.
Dengue Is No Longer Only a Monsoon Issue
Health experts note that warmer temperatures, erratic rain and fast urbanisation help dengue-carrying mosquitoes survive longer, making the disease a near year-round concern. ICMR and Panacea Biotec have completed Phase III trial enrolment of 10,335 volunteers for DengiAll, an indigenous single-dose dengue vaccine candidate; it is not yet approved.
Simple Precautions
Public health guidance generally advises emptying water from coolers, buckets and pots weekly, covering water tanks, using mosquito nets or repellents, and wearing full-sleeved clothing in the evening.
When to See a Doctor
High fever, severe body ache, persistent vomiting or breathlessness need prompt medical attention. This article is general information and not a substitute for a doctor’s advice.
