Indore: India’s Cleanest City Again — What Makes the Model Work
A Long Run at the Top
Indore has been ranked India’s cleanest city in the Swachh Survekshan rankings for several years running, with recent reports counting eight consecutive years. Bhopal also ranks among the top ten cleanest cities, in sixth place.
Source Segregation
The city is widely cited for door-to-door waste collection with separate bins for wet and dry waste, which makes recycling and composting easier.
Citizen Participation
Public awareness drives, neighbourhood competitions and active resident groups have helped sustain the habit beyond official campaigns.
Clean Air Too
In the 2026 clean air survey Indore was also ranked second in the country, reflecting work on air quality alongside waste management.
