Panchang for Sunday, 27 September 2026 (Pratipada, Nakshatra, Muhurat, Rahu Kalam)

For general information only. Timings for the tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana are from the official Rashtriya Panchang; Ujjain sunrise-based times are calculated for Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, and can differ by a few minutes in other cities. Customs vary by region and family. Please check a local panchang or a priest you trust. This page contains no predictions.

Here is the panchang for Sunday, 27 September 2026, published the evening before. It is a Krishna Paksha Pratipada day, the first day of the dark fortnight after Bhadrapada Purnima, and the Rashtriya Panchang notes that Pitri Paksha Tarpana begins on this date. Timings are given for Ujjain and, in a separate table, for Prayagraj. All times are in Indian Standard Time (IST).

The date in three calendars

Calendar Date
Gregorian (English) calendar Sunday, 27 September 2026
Vikram Samvat (Hindu lunisolar) 2083, Bhadrapada Krishna Pratipada (called Ashwin Krishna Pratipada in the purnimanta calendars of north India)
Shaka Samvat (Hindu lunisolar) 1948, Bhadrapada Krishna Pratipada
Shaka Samvat (Indian national civil calendar) 5 Asvina 1948

Two systems name the months differently. In the amanta system (Gujarat, Maharashtra, South India) the fortnight after Purnima is Bhadrapada Krishna; in the purnimanta system used across north India it is already Ashwin Krishna. The Rashtriya Panchang lists it as Bhadra Krishna. Vikram and Shaka year numbers change at Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (March 2026) in most of north India. In Gujarat the Vikram year changes after Diwali (10 November 2026 this year).

When does the Hindu date change? (tithi timeline)

In the Hindu calendar the weekday changes at sunrise, but the tithi can change at any hour. The tithi running at sunrise gives the day its name. Timeline on the English clock, from the official Rashtriya Panchang (all times IST):

Time (English calendar) What changes (Vikram Samvat panchang)
Saturday 26 Sep, 10:19 PM Purnima ends. Krishna Paksha Pratipada begins. Karana Balava begins.
Sunday 27 Sep, about 6:20 AM (Ujjain sunrise) Sunday begins. The tithi at sunrise is Pratipada, so 27 September is the Pratipada day.
9:43 AM Karana Balava ends. Kaulava begins.
11:08 AM Nakshatra Uttara Bhadrapada ends. Revati begins.
11:17 AM Yoga Vriddhi ends. Yoga Dhruva begins.
1:20 PM The Sun enters Hasta nakshatra.
8:59 PM Pratipada ends. Dwitiya begins. Kaulava ends, Taitila begins.

Monday 28 Sep, 8:54 AM Yoga Dhruva ends. The next yoga begins.
Monday 28 Sep, 10:17 AM Nakshatra Revati ends. Ashwini begins. The Moon moves from Mina to Mesha.
Monday 28 Sep, about 6:20 AM Monday begins. The tithi at sunrise is Dwitiya (until 7:14 PM).

In simple words: on Sunday 27 September, Pratipada is in force from sunrise until 8:59 PM. After 8:59 PM, Pratipada ends and Dwitiya begins.

Prayagraj timings

The tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana times above are the same everywhere in India. Only the sunrise-based times change with the city. Prayagraj sits about 24 minutes east of Ujjain, so its sun rises and sets earlier. These are calculated for Prayagraj (25.44° N, 81.85° E):

Event Prayagraj
Sunrise 5:56 AM
Sunset 5:50 PM
Length of day about 11 hours 53 minutes
Moonrise 6:11 PM
Moonset 7:13 AM (28 September)
Brahma Muhurat 4:20 AM to 5:08 AM
Abhijit Muhurat 11:29 AM to 12:17 PM
Yamaganda 11:53 AM to 1:22 PM
Gulika Kaal 2:51 PM to 4:21 PM
Rahu Kalam 4:21 PM to 5:50 PM

The Prayagraj times come from our own calculation with the same method as the Ujjain times (traditional sunrise and sunset, Lahiri ayanamsa). We checked the method against Prokerala for Ujjain but have not compared Prayagraj with a second website, so please allow a few minutes either way.

About the day: Krishna Pratipada and Pitri Paksha

Pratipada is the first tithi of a lunar fortnight. This one opens the Krishna (dark) fortnight that follows Bhadrapada Purnima. The Rashtriya Panchang lists Pitri Paksha Tarpana beginning on 27 September, and traditionally the Pratipada tithi is the day some families perform shraddha for relatives who passed away on a Pratipada. Observances and exact timings vary by family and community, so please follow your local panchang, priest or temple. For dates, tithis and rules see our Pitru Paksha guide.

Planet news: Mercury (Budh) enters Tula

Many readers searched for Budh on Saturday 26 September because Mercury changed sign. In the sidereal (Lahiri) system used by the Indian panchang, Mercury moved from Kanya (Virgo) to Tula (Libra) at about 12:30 PM IST on Saturday 26 September 2026 (our calculation gives 12:29 PM, some Hindi calendars list 12:31 PM and Prokerala lists 12:36 PM, because calendars differ by a few minutes). See our full Budh gochar explainer. Here is the full picture from our own astronomical calculation:

Event Date and time (IST)
Mercury enters Tula (Libra) Saturday 26 September 2026, about 12:30 PM
Mercury turns retrograde (vakri) Saturday 24 October 2026, about 1:54 PM
Mercury turns direct (margi) Friday 13 November 2026, about 10:18 PM
Mercury leaves Tula for Vrishchika (Scorpio) Wednesday 2 December 2026, about 5:18 PM

Mercury goes back to being direct on 13 November, so it is in retrograde motion in Tula for almost three weeks. This is astronomy only. This page makes no predictions about signs or people.

Coming up

  • 28 September: Krishna Dwitiya (from 8:59 PM on 27 September until 7:14 PM). The Moon enters Mesha at 10:17 AM.
  • 11 October: Sharad Navratri begins.
  • 24 October: Mercury turns retrograde; 13 November: Mercury turns direct.

How we checked these times

The tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana times come from the official Rashtriya Panchang 1948 Saka (2026–27) of the Positional Astronomy Centre, India Meteorological Department. We compared them with Prokerala’s panchang for Ujjain and with our own astronomical calculation, and they agree within 2 minutes (for example, Pratipada ends 8:59 PM in the book and in our calculation, 8:58 PM on Prokerala; the nakshatra ends 11:08 AM, 11:08 AM and 11:07 AM). The Ujjain sunrise, sunset, Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda, Gulika, Abhijit and Brahma Muhurat times matched Prokerala. The book has no separate city tables, so all city times are calculated. Moonrise and moonset differ from Prokerala by 3 minutes. Mercury’s sign changes are our own calculation. Please follow your family’s or temple’s panchang for religious observances.
