Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ Gets Theatrical Release Before Netflix

Greta Gerwig’s “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” will open in IMAX and wide theatrical release on February 12, 2027, before arriving on Netflix on April 2, 2027, according to the streamer’s official Tudum announcement.

The release plan marks a notable shift for Netflix, which has generally kept its big franchise films exclusive to streaming. Giving the adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s book a full theatrical run first, with IMAX sneak previews starting February 10, signals how much confidence the studio has in Gerwig’s take on the beloved fantasy series. The film was originally planned for a Thanksgiving 2026 theatrical run with a Christmas Day Netflix release, before the date moved to early 2027.

Gerwig, who previously directed “Little Women” and “Barbie,” takes on the prequel story about how the magical land of Narnia came to be. With its theatrical-first strategy and a director known for box-office success, the film is shaping up as one of Netflix’s most closely watched releases of 2027.
