When does the Hindu date change? (tithi timeline)

In the Hindu calendar the weekday changes at sunrise, but the tithi can change at any hour. The tithi running at sunrise gives the day its name. Timeline on the English clock, from the official Rashtriya Panchang (all times IST):

Saturday 26 Sep, 5:33 AM The Moon moves from Kumbha to Mina.
Saturday 26 Sep, about 6:20 AM (Ujjain sunrise) Saturday begins. The tithi at sunrise is Purnima, so 26 September is the Purnima day.

Sun and moon (Ujjain)

Event Time
Sunrise 6:20 AM
Sunset 6:15 PM
Length of day about 11 hours 55 minutes
Moonrise 6:03 PM
Moonset 6:36 AM (27 September)

Sunrise and sunset are shown the traditional panchang way (the centre of the Sun at the horizon). The sunrise you actually see is about 4 minutes earlier, and the visible sunset about 4 minutes later. Moonrise and moonset are calculated for Ujjain and can differ by 2 to 3 minutes between calculators (Prokerala shows 6:00 PM and 6:39 AM). On Purnima the full Moon rises around sunset.

Prayagraj timings

The tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana times above are the same everywhere in India. Only the sunrise-based times change with the city. Prayagraj sits about 24 minutes east of Ujjain, so its sun rises and sets earlier. These are calculated for Prayagraj (25.44° N, 81.85° E):

Event Prayagraj
Sunrise 5:56 AM
Sunset 5:51 PM
Length of day about 11 hours 55 minutes
Moonrise 5:38 PM
Moonset 6:12 AM (27 September)
Brahma Muhurat 4:20 AM to 5:08 AM
Abhijit Muhurat 11:29 AM to 12:17 PM
Gulika Kaal 5:56 AM to 7:25 AM
Rahu Kalam 8:55 AM to 10:24 AM
Yamaganda 1:23 PM to 2:52 PM

The Prayagraj times come from our own calculation with the same method as the Ujjain times (traditional sunrise and sunset, Lahiri ayanamsa). We checked the method against Prokerala for Ujjain but have not compared Prayagraj with a second website, so please allow a few minutes either way.

About the day: Bhadrapada Purnima and the start of Pitru Paksha

Purnima is the full-moon tithi. The Rashtriya Panchang lists Indra Purnima on 26 September, and Prokerala lists Shri Satyanarayan Vrat and Purnima Vrat. This Purnima also begins Pitru Paksha with Purnima Shraddha; the Rashtriya Panchang lists Pitri Paksha Tarpana beginning the next day, 27 September. Observances and exact timings vary by family and community, so please follow your local panchang, priest or temple. For dates, tithis and rules see our Pitru Paksha guide.

Coming up

  • 27 September: Krishna Paksha Pratipada. See our panchang for Sunday 27 September.
  • 28 September: Krishna Dwitiya; the Moon enters Mesha at 10:17 AM.
  • 11 October: Sharad Navratri begins.

How we checked these times

The tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana times come from the official Rashtriya Panchang 1948 Saka (2026–27) of the Positional Astronomy Centre, India Meteorological Department. We compared them with Prokerala’s panchang for Ujjain and with our own astronomical calculation, and they agree within 2 minutes (for example, Purnima ends 10:19 PM in the book and in our calculation, 10:18 PM on Prokerala; the nakshatra ends 11:32 AM in the book and on Prokerala, 11:31 AM in our calculation). The Ujjain sunrise, sunset, Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda, Gulika, Abhijit and Brahma Muhurat times matched Prokerala within a minute. The book has no separate city tables, so all city times are calculated. Moonrise and moonset differ from Prokerala by 3 minutes. Please follow your family’s or temple’s panchang for religious observances.
